What is Teen Dating Violence?
A teen may be in a dating violence relationship if their partner controls who they see, what they do, where they go, what they wear, or who they talk to. The partner may often make accusations of flirting, cheating, or having sex with others. Other warning signs include:
- Stalking or tracking
- Lying or encouragement to lie
- Threats of suicide or homicide
- Physical aggression
- Forceful sex
- Sex coercion
- Strangling
- Put downs and /or name calling
- Isolation from friends and/or family
- Unwanted social media access
- Mind games
- Threats
- Destruction of important things
- Humiliation
What is a Healthy Relationship?
Healthy relationships are vital to teen development. It is important to discuss what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like with your teen. Examples of healthy relationships include:
- Having fun together more often than not
- Enjoying spending time separately
- Always feel safe with each other
- Trust each other
- Support each other's goals
- Respect each other's opinions
- Ability to solve conflict without putting each other down
- Equal decision-making power about what is done in the relationship
- Each control their own money
- Have close friends & family who like the other person and are happy about the relationship
- Never feel pressure to have sex
- Ability to have privacy and personal space
